Is It Harder For Latinos To Learn English In High Schools Than For Any Other Non-american Individual?

Posted on November 26th, 2009

In ESL classes in high schools, is it harder for Latinos to learn english since whatever they need to know is laid out infront of them in their own language? OR would you say that it’s just as hard for them to learn English? Or is it easy to learn a new language for anyone?

I don’t know why it would be any harder or easier for Latinos as a group to learn English than it is for anyone else.
The details of your question look like perhaps you’re trying to get to the issue of bilingual education and the debate about English-only classes, but I’m not sure. The second question you ask (about things being “laid out in front of them) is not clear.

The problem is America is more catering to Spanish than any other language. So instead of total immersion you get to fall back on your native language if something is not understood. But languages like Arabic and Chinese, which also use different characters, aren’t much catered to in school. So either way its hard

I would not say it is easy for anyone to learn a new language. But it is certainly no more difficult for Latinos than it is for everyone else.
